Pasta – Cooked al dente with a little salt and oil – forms the base of the dish and gives the pasta its structure and texture

Pasta Water – Reserved after boiling the pasta – helps loosen the sauce and makes it creamy so it coats the pasta better

Green Peas – The main ingredient in our pasta – creates the creamy green sauce and adds a slightly sweet, fresh flavor

Fresh Basil – Sadly I did not have fresh basil so I had to use the dried one.

Dried Thyme – For the slight herby flavor

Garam Masala – You can use a mixture of cinnamon and nutmeg instead of it.

Garlic Powder – Brings a savory, aromatic flavor that complements the peas

Ginger Paste or Fresh Ginger – I just used store bought Ginger paste, but you can use Fresh Ginger as well.

Green Chillies or Chilli Flakes – Provides the spicy kick and adds heat to the pasta

How To Make Green Peas Pasta

Step 1: Prepare the Green Peas Base

Start by taking a blender jar and adding the green peas, which are the main ingredient and the base of the sauce. Along with the peas, add fresh basil (or dried basil if fresh is not available), dried thyme, garam masala, garlic powder, green chillies or chilli flakes, and ginger paste or freshly grated ginger

These ingredients together create a flavorful, aromatic paste that will coat the pasta beautifully. Blend everything until you get a smooth and thick paste

If the mixture feels too dry, you may add a tablespoon or two of water to help the blender run smoothly, but avoid making it too watery because the sauce should remain thick and rich.

Step 2: Heat the Oil and Cook the Paste

Place a pan on medium heat and add a small amount of cooking oil. Allow the oil to warm up slightly before adding the blended green peas mixture. Once the paste goes into the pan, start stirring gently so that it does not stick to the bottom

As the mixture cooks, the raw flavors of the peas, ginger, and spices will begin to mellow, and the aroma will become richer.

Continue cooking the paste for several minutes until it thickens slightly and turns into a creamy sauce. Stir occasionally to ensure even cooking and prevent burning.

Step 3: Add the Cooked Pasta

Once the green peas sauce has thickened and cooked properly, add the pre-cooked pasta to the pan.

The pasta should be cooked al dente, meaning it is tender but still has a slight bite to it. Gently mix the pasta with the sauce so that every piece is well coated with the green peas mixture

Take your time while stirring to ensure the sauce spreads evenly across the pasta, giving it a uniform flavor and creamy texture.

Step 4: Adjust the Consistency with Pasta Water

If the sauce feels too thick or the pasta appears slightly dry, add a little reserved pasta water

Pasta water contains starch, which helps the sauce bind better with the pasta and become silky in texture. Add the water gradually while stirring so that the sauce loosens slightly but still remains creamy.

This step helps achieve the perfect consistency for the pasta dish.

Step 5: Serve the Pasta Hot

Once everything is well mixed and heated through, remove the pan from the heat. Transfer the pasta to serving plates while it is still warm and fresh

The dish is best enjoyed hot, when the sauce is creamy and the flavors are at their peak. You may also garnish it with extra basil, chilli flakes, or a drizzle of olive oil if desired, to add a final touch of flavor and presentation.

FAQs

Can I use frozen green peas to make Green Peas Pasta?

You can but as stated earlier, I would recommend you not to. The taste usually comes from the fresh green peas, not frozen ones.

What type of pasta works best for Green Peas Pasta?

You can use any type of pasta such as penne, fusilli, spaghetti, or farfalle for this recipe. However, pasta shapes like penne or fusilli are ideal because their grooves and curves help hold the green peas sauce, ensuring every bite is full of flavor.

Can I make Green Peas Pasta without garam masala?

Yes, you can substitute garam masala with a small pinch of cinnamon and nutmeg to achieve a similar warm flavor profile. Alternatively, you can skip it entirely and rely on herbs like basil and thyme for a lighter, more herb-forward pasta sauce.

How do I make the Green Peas Pasta sauce creamier?

To make the sauce creamier, you can add extra pasta water, a splash of cream, or a little grated cheese while mixing the pasta. The starch from the pasta water naturally helps thicken and emulsify the sauce, giving it a smoother and silkier consistency.

Is Green Peas Pasta healthy?

Yes, Green Peas Pasta is a healthy and nutritious dish. Green peas are rich in plant-based protein, fiber, vitamins, and antioxidants, making the pasta both filling and wholesome. When combined with moderate oil and herbs, it becomes a balanced and nutritious meal option.
